Apple’s New TV Series Will Star Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston

Apple’s push into the world of original programming continues to take shape, as the tech giant confirmed on Wednesday that it has ordered two season of a new original television series from A-list Hollywood stars Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston.

In Apple Video’s first Netflix-like play, the tech company snagged the drama about a network morning show for two ten-episode seasons. According to Deadline, “it is described as an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women (and men) who carry out this daily televised ritual.” Okay, which one is Kathy Lee and which one is Hoda?

The untitled Aniston-Witherspoon drama hails from Michael Ellenberg’s Media Res studio, Aniston’s Echo Films and Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine banner. The starry project was highly sought after by a number of outlets and landed a two-season order (10 episodes per season) from Apple. Media Res, Aniston and Witherspoon are the principle owners of the show.

The series is based on an idea from Ellenberg and will draw background material from CNN senior media correspondent Brian Stelter’s 2013 book “Top of the Morning,” which recounted the recent rivalry between NBC’s “Today” and ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Jay Carson (“House of Cards”) is writing the pilot and will serve as showrunner. Stelter is serving as a consultant.

Reimagining the original anthology, Amazing Stories, executive produced by Spielberg in partnership with Bryan Fuller, “will transport the audience to worlds of wonder through the lens of today’s most imaginative filmmakers, directors and writers.” In addition to Spielberg and Fuller, Amazing Stories is executive produced by Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and Hart Hanson; and produced by Universal Television and Amblin Television.
